Video Gaming - FFXIV - Postcards from A Realm Reborn

Yeah, this is why I have been lax lately.. still trying to put the words together on a blog entry about the aforementioned game but until then, I'll share a few of my favourite pictures I've taken so far.

More pictures after the jump!

Random - What a busy few weeks!

(I had this done on Monday but had issues posting from work and forgot to get it done at home till now)
Here I was previously stating we had a quiet week and then suddenly we've had a hectic, stressful, sick week with some fun thrown in!
  1. Sentinels of the Multiverse arrived! Oh how much fun that was :D Our first game was a complete flop of frustration (Omnitron) but that was pure bad luck with what happened at the beginning of it and killed us within 15 mins or less. After that, we played another 4 games rather happily. Honestly, our favourite Core Set Villain was Citizen Dawn because she felt like a raid fight (juggling). I held off reviewing it after those 5 games because I wanted it to sink in and would review after our next game. We haven’t played it since then (just due to time) but we will by end of the week.
  2. Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn.. So we decided to jump on the train into a WoW-esque MMO and aside from all the troubles at present with HUGE populations, when we are in the game: We love it! It may feel WoW-esque but there is enough to make it unique. The notables for me is the class system (no need for alts), the crafting/gathering as well as the whole Final Fantasy feel.
  3. Um.. there is no #3? With the above two, we’ve been lazy mostly I believe and done a mixture of things but getting into another board game tonight or perhaps Pandemic with a few .
  4. Next parcel arriving today! In this parcel is the Rook City & Infernal Relics expansions for Sentinels of the Multiverse (leaving us just Shattered Timelines to get) as well as at the very least (crossing fingers) an X-Wing & TIE Fighter miniature for X-Wing Miniatures Game. I am crossing my fingers in the hope that Pinnacle Games have some of my other bits I ordered in there but I am being far too hopeful I believe.

Once things settle down, I’ll get back on the reviewing bandwagon as well as some play sessions.  Don’t hold your breath though but I am doing better than I anticipated this last few months!

Random - Slow week is slow

So my last blog entry before the review where I said things were slow and then suddenly I was hit with a muse and got 1.5 reviews done (Yes, I am looking at you, Blood Bowl Sudden Death that is still half done..).

As of today, I've had an injection into my left shoulder for the bursitus there, so I am hoping with that and the panadene forte, I will get back into it. It really did drain my mental power (hah! Those who know me, would laugh at me and mental >.>) and hoping it will come back soon.

On another topic, my geek nature of Star Wars has overflowed into the realm of biting the bullet and getting two core sets of Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game and I have also infected another in our board game group who has quite a bit on order.

We're both really, REALLY looking forward to possibly doing a tournament in due time depending on interest in our group and any of the others or perhaps if there is any locals who play it.

With all this, Tmara and I are trying to get back into playing some games 2-player here, one of which is to be Arkham Horror since it has been a long while. We've also not gone back to Space Alert since our first game and that one I want to revisit.

We'll see how things go since honestly.. we've left Guild Wars 2 in the dust for now and we've subscribed to Star Wars Old Republic again to get our stories done now that Tmara has a newer PC that can actually run it efficiently. That part has been a LOT of fun.. We've almost finished our first toons (my Bounty Hunter, her Sith Warrior) which hit level 43 last night.

Random - Nothing to see here, people.

That's right, not much really to blog on at present.

We've been trying out the new Neverwinter MMO, as well as been busy visiting a friend and I recently have dived back into Guild Wars 2 as an Engineer and liking it a bit more now than previously (more how I think about being support vs giving in and going deeps).

On the board gaming front, the board gaming group has hit it off just fine :) We met two of the gamers last Friday at a cafe for a drink. Apparently we were abnormal enough that we'd be fitting in just right. How little they know ;) So the 18th is D-Day for that, We'll be playing Power Grid for the first time and I'll have to make sure I stock up on caffeine for the night :P

EDIT: Oh and almost forgot.. got an eReader again :D Kindle Paperwhite.. loving it a lot now. Much more than the Kobo Touch and MUCH faster.

Video Gaming - On the topic of video games...

Since Tmara and I were stuck without internet after the move for around 2 weeks, we got back into playing on the console in the meantime.

One such purchase was Kingdoms of Amalur:Reckoning (we now have two copies so we don't have to share) and the other purchase was 3 copies of Sim City (while on special) for when our net arrived.

Both of them were bad for our non-game time. Sim City we tend to play in 5 hour blocks.. at a minimum (Civ5 memories of "Just one more!"),

Funnily, Kingdoms is the same. It isn't the combat that draws us in (standard fanfare there with combat really) but the lore that Salvatore has done. The world is amazing to delve into and I hope they do make more.

Amalur is one of the games I play on reviewing when we have finished it and may get insight from both myself and Tmara for it.

The only other game we bought was Gears of War 3 so we could finally finish that part of the storyline. It isn't finished yet but in the last act now. We need to get back into that when not Amalur'ing.

Random - Absence from Blog

So I've been thinking lately that my absence from here has purely been from being too indepth in Guild Wars 2 and hence we really haven't been doing anything that would result in reviews from board games and the like.

I'm going to be making a few different posts here in the coming weeks as the theme of the blog will transform into a few more aspects and hence be a "What crap can I post today?" based around my "Ooo, shiny!" habits in all ways of life :P

So instead of just gaming related, I will branch into movies, TV series, even photos (yes, going to try and start doing some photography with the mother-in-law's old camera, still a VERY good camera too) and see where that all goes.

Video Gaming - Guild Wars 2 Guild Plug - Why Plug When I can RePlug?

Fellow guildy and officer of Kamikaze Runners did a shameless plug on his blog recently and we all know how actively creative I am to do the same sort of shameless plug (*coughspluttercough*) and hence.. replugging!

Yeah yeah.. slow day at work and my usual bad, bad humour sneaking through.

Anyway, check the link below and see what you think. I am not expecting miracles since I know this blog isn't active lately and well.. not many read my banter ;)

Without further ado:

Video Gaming - Guild Wars 2 - Amazing Vistas!

I will work out doing something more creative in the future but for now I have been taking a screenshot or two in the vista points (marker on the map of a point that shows off a feature of the area) as Marrra was doing them just so she could have images that showed off the amazing work the developers have done.

Then I did a "Look at my new background" comment and she stopped taking the pics due to my quality over hers.. >.>

Anyway, putting up a gallery on my photobucket and linking in this thread plus will put my favourite pictures so far below! Apologies, some of the images will be deleted as some don't look too good and there is doubles as I was Print Screen happy :P

Photobucket Gallery

And as a friend said in his blog, yes these are all ingame graphics!

Video Gaming - Guild Wars 2 - Don't gasp too loud!!

Yes, since the flu I was hit by, I've been really really lazy here in the blog. And admittedly, with the build up to Guild Wars 2 and there was our stint at home for a month or so with playing Dragon's Dogma with my partner on the consoles side by side.

Anyway, now Guild Wars 2 has reared its oh-so-beautiful-and-fun-head, my life has gone down the toilet when I get home from work.

Guild Wars 2. Is. That. Good.

I will explain more in the coming weeks (board gaming is on hold for now due to GW2 :P) with many a screenshot now that I have tried my 3-4 classes and found my niche.

Video Gaming - Guild Wars 2 - The Wait for the Long Weekend

Inspired by Girl vs MMO's post yet for this gamer, I am eager than EVER because I've yet to walk into the world of GW2 and resorted only to the videos and articles. From what she has been going on about over Mumble, I am looking forward to seeing it for myself!

Only a few days to go :D Not to mention, it is a long weekend! So it works out in the end with us getting the full use of the whole Beta Weekend.

With Borderlands 2 Collectors pre-purchased I wonder whether I will want to have another game under my belt but with Kamikaze Runners probably doing both World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 2, then I won't be able to say no >.>

Also, it is scary that I actually started up Guild Wars last night and couldn't remember how to play my Ranger/Elementalist. I had to redo his skill bar to my current playstyle and will try for more of the Nightfall campaign as I only just hit level 20ish.

Video Gaming - Diablo 3 - First Foray into Hardcoring

Beyond playing a Demon Hunter in the beta to level 13, I've not played a DH anymore than that and I am happy with that. When it came from the days of playing Champions of Norrath or Dark Alliance on the console: I loooooved playing the kiting character even if it took a long time to down a boss.

So here I went, the beginnings of my Demon Hunter in the hardcoring (yes, I know at least two females who would react to that comment, you both know who you are!) land within the Cathedral. I managed to down Leoric at level 8 (9 when he died) and that was fun! Never had a threat in it honestly when you watch the animations.

In all honesty, the only time I almost died was in the Cathedral, level 2 or 3, I had a bunch of white skeletons spawn behind me, then infront of me.. I had:

LMB: Hungering Arrow/Puncturing Rune
RMB: Entangling Shot/No Rune
#1: Caltrops/No Rune

I had no standard AoE and I had no where to run.. I have no idea how I lived. I honestly said out loud "Shit, bye bye character".

All in all.. LOVE hardcore mode and wondering how long it will be before I die :P This Demon Hunter will be paired with my partner's Wizard, so only time will tell but as long as we play smart: This will be one helluva ride.

Video Gaming - Diablo 3 (Spoilers!) - Help me, Princess Leah, you're my only hope!

Alright, without further ado, as promised...

Too cute? Or did you see the marshmellows and think "Mmm, damn I want just one..."

Wrong, because you can never have just one.

Get on with it!

Alright, alright, what did you think of the ending and the build up to it?

Sure, it isn't an award winning movie or a Shakespeare theatre play but in the end: I believe it was better than the previous two games in the franchise (not that I include Diablo 1 as having a story compared to D2 and D3).

The ending was plain and simple: Diablo is defeated and the day is saved but really, with the build up, where did it really get Sanctuary in the end?

We've now had the epic fights in both Heaven and Hell, both aspects of Sanctuary that are vastly important are fleshed out and explored, Deckard Cain has passed on and left his legacy in Leah's hands yet were those hands stable enough to hold in all that happened from there on out? Where did that get us now?

Remember, this is just my own speculation and I know others could do this much better than I but enough of that.

Adria, Leah & the Prime Evil

To start with I am speaking of Adria's plot to use her daughter, Leah, as a tool to bring about the Prime Evil.

Did Leah really die? Yes and no. No one can really deny that Leah died in a very bloody manner but that is only half of the equation.

In the beginning, Adria was willing to sacrifice her (only?) daughter whom the father was Aidan, the Dark Wanderer as Diablo himself at the time, to bring about Sanctuary's eventual conversion into perpetual Hell through whatever bribery Adria required.

But by having two evil parents, does this eventually mean the offspring will be just the same?

No. Leah may not be destined for the same path in the end, no matter how much she was twisted around her mother's little finger in the end.

From square one, we hear non-player characters in New Tristram talk about how they are amazed that Leah not only tends to the wounded but she also helps at the barricades against the undead that attack. She is the "Wonder Woman" of the town, helping those weak and injured while being the strong, stalwart defender, a champion even.
Never once does she shirk from her responsibility, even when she doesn't believe all her uncle is trying to impart on her, she never once turns away. Then she meets her mother and she is used to harness the power of the Black Soulstone to trap the demons. Nearing her end, she almost falters in Bastion Keep but even then she manages to keep it together albeit barely. All while doing this, she is doing it in the belief she is saving Sanctuary from the Seven Evils and never once does she attempt or believe she will be using it for evil.

To get even to that point of where her mortal form is torn from the physical realm, no one else could have done as she had as she had a connection with Diablo in her blood as well as how she is a Nephalem. With the above, it is my opinion that her form is out there still and ready to be found. A journey by non other than the players themselves.

Future of the Agiris Council

Tyrael, at the end of the game, steps back up into the Council as a mortal nonetheless but not into his position as Justice but filling the void that is Wisdom in Malthael's mad absence.

Due to the ending to Diablo 3 and how epic it fell on the player to do what they had to do, as well as the comments as the game moved on that the player themselves would die to make sure everyone else would live. This in it's own right is the embodiment of Justice.

But what about Imperius? There was a confrontation but it was cut short. With his temper and unfinished business with Tyrael and the player for the events that occured because of them, the fight will not end in diplomacy and may well birth a new Evil.

The Evils?

Imperius, Adria in the background awaiting her lover's command, and even the Mad Malthael are all there waiting to start a fight for whatever reasons.

Not to mention the Black Soulstone was never destroyed.

The main curiosity I have out of them is Malthael as the only appearance I believe for him is the animated short, Wrath.

And what would a Diablo game be without Diablo making a reappearance?

With the Worldstone destroyed and hence now the Nephalem making their re-emergence (for good and evil), the world as they know it and the Evils they have faced may well mean nothing to what could come.

Sanctuary's Future?

Now the original trilogy is over, could we now see a far more expansive Diablo coming in the future? I shudder to think of it like Warcraft 3 moving into World of Warcraft (Yes, I still do play WoW :P) because what would Blizzard get to gain from changing a second franchise into the land of the MMO?

They should keep Diablo where it is in the genre it is but to enlarge the playing field as the lore is now unlocked into the unknown. The lore nut in me loves the thought of the world expanding almost as much as I love the thought of...

Video Gaming - Diablo 3 - Just finished Normal

I don't know if it is the time (12:20am) or that it hasn't all sunk in yet but I am not 100% happy with Diablo 3's ending but ultimately: It wasn't bad. I guess I wanted a few loose ends tied up and I hope those are what will come in an expansion.

Please don't make it for Diablo 4 as it took 12 years for Diablo 3 alone.

I will post sometime my thoughts on the story (pre-reading Sin War trilogy as well and with the lore pieces in the game taken into account) and will aptly label it thusly for spoilers.

For now though, I need sleep.

Video Gaming - Diablo 3 - Witch Doctor "Ooo eee, ooo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang!"

I played through the open beta of Diablo 3 and honestly, after almost burning out in a 48 hour period of getting all those achievements (in the belief I would get something out of it for the release of Diablo 3) I came to the conclusion in the 13 levels of each class that the Witch Doctor was my least favourite. When the game went live then, having that point of view, I avoided him.

Oh how wrong was I!

My Witch Doctor is my main with my partner Marrra's Monk and I love him to death :D

Why do I love him? Well, it was touch and go till around the pubescent teens until the rebellious-leaving home tweens to venture in the wide world on their own.

The abilities really opened up for me when I hit level 20ish, most notably Locust Swarm with Pestilence & Acid Cloud with Rune: Acid Rain. These are my fond love right now and I keep trying to redo my abilities yet I keep coming back to them over and over. The others I have fun with is Rabid Dogs + Sacrifice too, nothing like a bit of corpse explosion to start your day :D

At present my Witch Doctor is level 28 or so and I believe nearing the end of Act III, so obviously there are many runes I want to try but not there yet.

Marrra and I both agreed as well that we will be doing this duo as a hardcore duo as well but not until her computer is happily upgraded. It would be a huge annoyance if a computer failure was the reason we had a hardcore toon's death!
